The Granduca Madonna, 1505, oil on wood, Pitti Palace, Florence
Madonna Alba, 1512, Pitti Palace, Florence
Rafael painted 20 Madonna pictures, which in most of them we can see only one baby. Some of the paintings, including ‘Madonna Alba’ showing two or even three babies.
When Rafael added more then one baby to the painting, we can observe the, sometimes, strange relations between the main figures in the painting.
In ‘Madonna Alba’ painting, Rafael painted two babies: baby Jesus and baby John the Baptist. John the Baptist was known to have homosexual tendency, and we can see in the painting, baby John the Baptist tries to touch baby Jesus.
The Madonna seams not satisfied with what John the Baptist is trying to do, and we can easily see her hand trying to push John away from Jesus.
