Veronese does not only serves as the church’s agent, but has his own agenda. In the following painting, Veronese used vulgarity to question (and ridicule) the Christian narrative of Jesus as the son of God.
At first blush, the white sack seems like the normally used salt bag of the era. It was common to heat it as to let the baby have a nice and warm seat. Nonetheless, the shape of the sack was intentionally designed to resemble a penis. It is as if Veronese implies Maria is dealing with God’s genitals.
Next to Maria, you can see Jacob whom is indifferent, Satan whom finds the situation amusing, and Jesus – whom is disappointed of how superficial has faith become.
